Bistro Bis

May 30, 2009

Just around the corner from my hotel in the Capitol Hill district of Washington, I found Bistro Bis. This spacious restaurant, located in The Hotel George, is owned and operated by Jeffrey Buben, a James Beard Foundation winner and chef -owner of Vidalia restaurant, also in Washington. I started with beet salade au citron, followed by calamari Basquise and finally duck hash landaise. This was one of the best two-hour brucnhes I have had in a long time.

Cru

June 4, 2009

I had an unbelievable dinner Thursday at Cru. Besides having the chef’s tasting menu, which was delicious, we had an impressive list of wines. We were also offered a taste from a 5 liter bottle of 1982 Pichon Lalande. Because of the size the bottle, a siphon was used to pour the wine into a decanter. A great time was had by all.

2002 Chablis Les Clos Servin
1996 Puligny Montrachet Pucelles Leflaive
2001 Gevrey Chambertin Fourrier
2001 Clos des Lambrays (magnum)
1993 Echezeaux Bocquenet
1988 Barolo Monprivato G. Mascarello
1982 Pichon Lalande (5L)

Ben’s Chili Bowl

May 29, 2009 Washington, DC

I was close to ‘U’ Street so I had to “Experience the taste of Ben’s Chili Bowl’ – the Washington landmark made even more famous by Barack Obama’s recent visit. I had the Ben’s Original Chili Half-Smoke (made famous in 1958) – that’s a hot dog, grilled and split and served on a warm steamed bun with mustard, onions, and chili. I also had a small vegetarian chili- also available in large size as well as by the gallon ($41.50 per gallon). I went on a off hour but even if there was a line, I think its worth a visit, at least once. And by the way, Bill Cosby and the Obama family eat for free (apparently Bill’s family needs to pay).

Breakfast of Champions

El Quim de la Boqueria
3/26/09

My favorite breakfast in Barcelona was in the famous Mercat de la Boqueria at El Quim. After a short wait for a seat at the counter I ordered the Huevos Fritos Chipirones (fried eggs topped with baby squid), pan and a glass of cava. No wonder this dish is a specialty of the house and a favorite of the locals! Now if only I could find this here in NYC.

Leo’s Latticini – Mama’s Lunch Menu

May 16, 2009

At the suggestion of Uncle Razz, we decided to make a detour and go to Corona to taste the kitchen at Leo’s Latticini. We ordered off Mama’s lunch menu and had a Mama’s Special (prosciuttini, salami, mozzarella, with mushrooms and peppers) and a Super Italian (prosciutto, sopresatta, cappicola and mozzarella). We enjoyed these sandwiches in Mama’s backyard café. We also took a pound of freshly made mozzarella home. And yes, Mama was there, sitting at a small table in the store.
