Sunday Dinner

March 7, 2010

We had a nice dinner Sunday night with friends at Northern Spy Food Co. The small East Village restaurant, named after an apple native to the Northeast (aka “Northern Spie”) offers ‘comfort food’ cooked with locally (Northeast and Mid-Atlantic) grown ingredients. They are big on pork here even though they ran out of the pork special at 7:00pm. The $20 dinner special for 3 courses is a great deal. They also serve some fantastic draft beer- I tried the Sixpoint Sweet Action and the Kelso Pilsner. It was the perfect ending to a busy a weekend.

Saturday Brunch

Had a wonderful brunch at Artisanal. For starters, we chose the basket of warm gourgères, caramelized pear crêpe and sausage and egg. For the ‘plats principaux, we had almond croissant French toast, sautéed skate wing and grilled English cheddar, apple and bacon. Finally, for desserts, we had the Artisinal cheesecake, crème brûlée ‘le cirque’ and housemade ice cream. We had a great time and it was a special treat. Well worth the $24.07 for 3 courses.

That’s so cheesy

Thanks to a generous birthday gift from our friends who manage things and automate things, we went to Artisanal for dinner Saturday night. I was surprised to see the place was jumping. We started with a small order of the traditional fondue – a rich, creamy tasty, cheesy blend, followed by a beet salad – endive, walnuts and goat cheese and a carpaccio of yellowfin tuna – shaved fennel and ratatouille vinaigrette. We were seduced by the special of the day – a seven hour braised lamb shank – so decided to share one. Good call – it was delicious. All of this was paired well with a 2008 Bourgogne Aligote from Olivier Leflaive. A selection of assorted housemade petits fours completed a wonderful meal and even better evening with my wife.

Zaytinya

January 13, 2010

Lunch at Zaytinya with Man from Pawtucket’s oldest brother. We were joined by The Phantom Diner so we could take full advantage of Washington, DC’s winter restaurant week. With the Phantom expected at any minute, we ordered three ” three-course fixed-price meal” – a bargain at $20.10. Unfortunately Phantom never showed and we were forced to eat the extra meal. Our bad.
