On our way back from Queens, and a quick stop at our favorite Filipino restaurant, we made a stop at Güllüoglu Baklava. I was previously unaware of this fantastic Turkish cafe that serves no less than 12 different kinds of baklava, apparently for more than 130 years in Istanbul. We got a few mini portions of fistikli baklava (pistachio baklava) and a piece of ekmek kadayifi (bread sponge cake with syrup). I much preferred the baklava and would pass next time on the sponge cake. But I need to go back because I was told they also serve the best ispanakli su boregi (spinach pie) in New York.

Baohaus LES

Last week I rode down to Rivington Street to try some bao at Baohaus. I ordered 3 of them – ‘skirt steak’, pork belly and chicken. The pork belly was very tasty but the beef one was a bit dry, and at $4 a bao, not really worth it. So I decided to supplement the 3 bao with an order of Prosperity Dumplings.

Pulino’s Bar & Pizzeria

Continuing my goal to have a really good breakfast, I decided to try Keith McNally’s Pulino’s Bar-Pizzeria. I know the corner of Bowery and Houston is not the most scenic breakfast spot, I would recommend trying it. I ordered a small pizza funghi with fried eggs, mushrooms, pancetta, mascarpone and grana. It was delicious. It had all the flavors I like plus the sunny side up eggs. Despite the constant din of the traffic, it was a great start to the day. Next time I think I’m going to try the pizza with nutella and sea salt.
